Trisha Yearwood Opens Up About Emotional Song She Wrote for Sister Beth

Country music icon Trisha Yearwood released “The Mirror” in July 2025. The deeply personal album is the first project to feature Yearwood’s songwriting skills on every song, offering fans a deeper look at the singer behind the scenes. Among the many people and things that inspired the music on this record is her sister, Beth Bernard. In early August, Yearwood took to Instagram with a heartwarming Reel featuring Bernard. “She is the ocean to my river, and I can’t thank her enough for her guidance, support, and love,” Yearwood captioned the National Sisters Day post.

In the video, the singer explains that she wrote “The Ocean and The River” in honor of Bernard. “I had had an idea for a while that I wanted to write a song for you,” Yearwood said to her. As she explained, both of her co-writers for the track, Leslie Satcher and Makayla Lynn, loved the idea and were happy to join forces. Ultimately, the song reflects how well Yearwood and Bernard complement each other. “We have a lot of things in common, but the things about us that make us different… we just kind of seem to [balance],” Yearwood said.

“I get so much strength from you,” Bernard tearfully shared, and Yearwood responded in kind. Fans couldn’t get enough of their sweet interaction, taking to the comments section to show them some love. “Beautiful and so touching! Sisterhood is truly a gift!” one fan wrote. The pair has been sharing that strength since their youth.

When Yearwood first burst onto the country music scene in the early 1990s, Bernard and the pair’s mother, Gwen, were photographed with her at the ACMs. However, this appearance wasn’t a one-off; Bernard has been by Yearwood’s side throughout her career. For instance, the two were photographed together at the 2024 CMAs, wearing coordinating outfits that made them look even more similar than usual. The pair has also shared adorable throwback photos of themselves having fun together as children.

Bernard has also collaborated with Yearwood for some of her projects outside of music. As Penguin Random House notes, Bernard co-authored two cookbooks with her sister, “Trisha’s Table” and “Home Cooking With Trisha Yearwood.” Bernard has also appeared alongside Yearwood on “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” such as when she joined her sibling to shop for arugula on the 2017 episode “Bringin’ Home The Farm.”

The Sisters Collaborated on a Touching Tribute to Their Mother in 2015

Surprisingly, Yearwood’s homage to Bernard on “The Mirror” isn’t the only musical connection they have. Bernard lent her voice to a beautiful Mother’s Day tribute to their late mother. In a Facebook video from May 2015, Yearwood and Bernard sang “I Remember You” on an episode of “Live With Kelly and Michael.”

“This song is really a tribute to her,” Yearwood said during the episode. “It’s a sad song about loss, but it’s also a hopeful song about them being with you all the time.” The sisters’ mother passed away in October 2011. As Yearwood explained, she and Bernard took care of their mother together in her final days.
