Garth Brooks is a country music icon and one of the best-selling artists of all time. Although he has achieved countless successes in his career, he still takes the time to remember the early moves that helped him get to where he is today. On August 11, 2025, Brooks celebrated a huge milestone: the 35th anniversary of his hit single, “Friends in Low Places.”
“It’s one of those songs that feels like it belongs to all of us,” Brooks said on his official website. “It’s the anthem of the underdog. I think that’s why it feels so right to sing no matter who you are.” Indeed, the song has taken on a life of its own over the years due to its universal appeal.
‘Friends in Low Places’ Made Its Debut in 1990

As Wide Open Country reported, Brooks first heard “Friends in Low Places” right after landing his first-ever record deal, while he was still working as a shoe salesman in Nashville. Although the song didn’t make it onto his first album, it debuted in 1990 as the lead single on Brooks’ “No Fences” record. As Billboard reported, the song quickly became a hit, spent four weeks at the top of the country charts, and was his third number-one. To date, it is one of his most successful songs ever.
The song won Brooks a Single of the Year trophy at the 1991 Country Music Association Awards. In that same year, he won his first Entertainer of the Year award, an honor he’s now enjoyed seven times as of this publication.
Brooks Named His Nashville Bar For The Hit Song

“Friends in Low Places” is beloved by fans as a song, but the name has also taken on a new life in Nashville. As Billboard reported, Brooks and his wife, Trisha Yearwood, opened a bar of the same name in March 2024. “A lot of love has gone into this building,” Brooks said of the process. “There’s a lot of people who busted their a– to make this happen.”
In his August 2025 announcement, he explained why he chose not to simply name the bar after himself. “A great song outlives the artist,” he said. He also shared a fun fact about the bar: the original songwriters’ names, Dewayne Blackwell and Earl “Bud” Lee, are proudly displayed on two massive palm trees inside “Friends in Low Places.” The trees, like the song itself, have come important parts of country music history for Brooks fans.
