Chris Young Shares a Funny Memory That is Classic Kenny Chesney

Having a number-one single is a significant musical achievement, and country music star Chris Young recently shared a funny memory about the night he first hit this milestone. In an interview with Taste of Country, the singer explained that a surprising person called to congratulate him when his song, “Getting You Home,” snagged the top chart spot: Kenny Chesney.

As Young shared, his VP of promotion called to let him know someone wanted to speak to him about the number one hit. “He hands the phone over, and it’s this guy, and he goes, ‘Yeah, man, this is Kenny. I just wanna say congrats on your first No. 1. I remember mine like [it was] yesterday, that’s a big deal!'” Young said.

Young was initially in disbelief, but Chesney’s congratulatory efforts didn’t stop there. In a video interview with New York’s Country 94.7 from 2021, Young explained that he and Chesney later shared a drink: “The very first beer that I had as like a cheers moment after that song was number one was from Kenny Chesney, so that’s pretty crazy.”

His first number-one hit may still be a fond memory for Chesney, but he has certainly come a long way since that early milestone. As Rolling Stone reported, the singer was honored with an induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame for 2025 as a “Modern Era Artist.”

When he learned of the news, Chesney took to X with a heartfelt post, writing in part: “Today gave me so much joy. Thanks so much to everyone.” Hundreds of fans congratulated the “No Shoes Nation” singer on his achievement, including one user who shared a touching message: “Quite deserved, young man. Your music has changed the trajectory of my life after the passing of my wife of 30 years.”

Young has also come a long way since his first number-one hit and has achieved that milestone several times. Now, the singer is bringing fans more new music in 2025. In early April, Young posted an Instagram Reel of himself singing along to a song on the radio. The song in question is a new single, “Til The Last One Dies,” the first single from a new upcoming album.

In an interview with Country 102.5, Young shared more details about the new album’s progress: “We’ve still got a couple more tracks to cut. But I’ve got a pretty good idea of the last songs that’ll be on there. We’re in a good position.” The first single off the album is already receiving plenty of love from fans; as Young explained, the first debut of the song was met with positive praise. “We got to the end of the first chorus, and people were already cheering. They didn’t even know the song yet. That’s a good sign.”
