Horror is one of the best genres to watch at any point of the year.
Sure, October is the prime time to watch all the scary stuff. However, winter is also a wonderful time to experience a low stakes horror release in theaters. Summer, though, is increasingly proving its worth as a horror enjoyment time – July especially.
“Jaws” was released on June 20, 1975 and celebrated its 50th birthday this year. A new version of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is coming this year 28 years after the original came out in October 1997. And streaming services like Shudder dedicate their entire libraries to new and old horror.
Here’s what’s coming to scare viewers this July.
“Sinners” – HBO Max (July 4th)
Ryan Coogler’s modern day vampire tale set in the 1932 Mississippi Delta follows Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as he confronts the evil that made him. The movie did extremely well for an original (even for a tentpole), making $267 million domestically and $350 million worldwide. Plus, it was also a critical success.
“Ziam” – Netflix (July 9)
Muay Thai meets zombies in this flick from Thailand. It’s action packed and appears to be light on traditional horror. But action-horror can be just as good. The trailer is intense enough to put any heartbeat above normal. Be sure to check it out when it drops on Netflix this July.
“Drop” – Peacock (July 11)
One of the year’s critical surprises, “Drop” follows a woman’s first date in years since her husband’s death. Things turn dire as she starts receiving messages of the threatening variety. She must find out who’s bothering her on her date. This leads to chaos, thrilling mystery and a very fun time.
“Push” – Shudder/AMC+ (July 11)
A pregnant realtor is terrorized by a client in this thrilling, scary cat and mouse movie. It was purchased at Cinequest Film Festival for exclusive distribution on Shudder so it has to be good. “Push” comes from writer/director team David Charbonier and Justin Douglas Powell who have experience from “The Boy Behind the Door” and “The Djinn.”
“I Know What You Did Last Summer” – Theaters (July 18)
In a return to the franchise that’s been referenced as much as its contemporaries, “I Know What You Did Last Summer” is a direct sequel to the second movie in the franchise. Jennifer Love Hewitt is back. The creep factor is turned way up. It’s all shaping up to follow the same template as the “Scream” franchises’ reboot/sequels.
“Monster Island” – Shudder/AMC+ (July 25)
Another Shudder exclusive, “Monster Island” is a World War II epic meets monster movie. A giant fish monster terrorizes marooned soldiers in this exciting and cheeky tale of fish woes.
