All the Terrifying Horror & Thriller Movies Coming This August

Summer is winding to a close and the best part of the year is about to begin.

While every streaming platform and TV network will be debuting new shows, it appears theaters will be the only place to catch the best horror movies. And thriller movies too.

Check out what you should be going to see this August.

Together (August 1, Theatrical)

Coming from writer/director Michael Shanks and starring real life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie, “Together” puts codependency in a whole new light. A mysterious force starts affecting a couple as they move to a countryside home. They begin to experience what can only be described as “coming together.” It appears to be very grotesque on top of the scary bits. Hooray!

Weapons (August 8, Theatrical)

Comedian turned horror director Zach Cregger (“Whitest Kids You Know”) puts out a follow up to “Barbarian” that will surely creep everyone watching out. Julia Garner stars as a teacher whose entire class disappears one night, leaving an entire community to turn on itself.

Shin Godzilla (August 14, Theatrical)

This is technically a rerelease but all kaiju fans need to see it. “Shin Godzilla” is a modern take on the original kaiju formula where the sometimes friend/sometimes foe Godzilla makes landfall in Japan, destroying everything it touches. This release is a 4K update thanks to distributor GKIDS.

Nobody 2 (August 15, Theatrical)

Bob Odenkirk’s action movie returns in its second form with “Nobody 2.” The former government assassin takes his family on a much needed vacation where they run into a corrupt theme park and police family. “Nobody” writer Derek Kolstad returns alongside a cast composed of the original stars and new ones like Colin Hanks. More action is all that’s expected here.

Witchboard (August 15, Theatrical)

“Witchboard” is a remake of the 1986 movie that has since garnered a cult following. A group of friends opens a cafe in New Orleans only to discover a haunted pendulum board. They soon find a modern coven of witches and much more as they try to figure out what is going on.

The Toxic Avenger (August 29, Theatrical)

This is an interesting one. “The Toxic Avenger” was announced in 2020. Star Peter Dinklage said the movie is not a remake even though it is based on a previously established series. After it was completed, “Toxic Avenger” was shown at Fantastic Fest in 2023 only to be shelved until 2025. Even with the behind the scenes distribution problems, this movie looks to be bonkers, disturbing and very entertaining.
