Amanda Seyfried Weighs in on ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Sequel

In the 15 years since Jennifer’s Body became a box office and financial flop, audiences have rediscovered the witty, feminist horror comedy. As Megan Fox told Diablo Cody in an ET Live interview, “I feel like it’s broken through to where a lot of people are just obsessed with this movie.” Megan Fox and Jennifer’s Body writer Diablo Cody have talked about wanting to take advantage of its newfound popularity and make a sequel. Now, Amanda Seyfried is also throwing her voice into the mix.

Amanda Seyfried Breaks Silence on ‘Jennifer’s Body’ Sequel

“You know, I’m looking forward to the sequel,” Amanda Seyfried told GQ when discussing Jennifer’s Body. “They’re working on it. I already said thumbs up. I was like, whenever you’re ready, I’m ready. We all just had a lot of fun, so I wanna celebrate it by doing a sequel.”

The critical and commercial battering that Jennifer’s Body received when it came out is still a mystery to her. “It’s, to me, a perfect movie,” she said. “It’s got balls. Diablo Cody was outspoken and beautiful and smart and funny. And we were expressing a certain angst in a very, very specific comedic way, in a very specific genre.”

If you ask Seyfried why Jennifer’s Body needs a sequel, she has a list, but it really comes down to one simple reason. “I wanna play Needy, I love Needy,” she said. “I just wanna see Needy in a power position. Not necessarily in a power suit, but in a power position,” she continued. “You know, maybe she runs her branch of Planned Parenthood or something. She’s a [expletive].”

She and the Cast Slam the Film’s Marketing

One thing that Megan Fox, Amanda Seyfried, Diablo Cody, and Karyn Kusama have been adamant about since the beginning is that the marketing for Jennifer’s Body was completely wrong. “The marketing sucked. It just did, and we all agree,” Seyfried said.

When Fox and Cody interviewed each other, they investigated why the movie was so misunderstood. “The studio had a strong, unshakable belief that this movie needed to be marketed to young men, specifically,” Cody told Fox. She also recalled emailing a marketing person from the studio and giving them ideas. “What specifically are you thinking?” she recalled writing. “And he wrote back: ‘Megan Fox hot.'”

Seyfried explained how much Kusama, as the director, enhanced the relationship between Needy and Jennifer, largely because she was “a fierce advocate of women in storytelling.” “But I felt like she cared deeply about the story underneath all of it,” Seyfried said. “She got it all, and she put it together so beautifully, and the marketing team cheapened it like it was just a romp, a gory romp. I think they ruined it.”
