‘The Princess Bride’ Broadway Musical Gets Major Update With Disney Songwriters

Dust off your six-fingered gloves and polish that Rodents of Unusual Size fan theory, “The Princess Bride” is officially heading to Broadway! This time it’s getting the full musical treatment. After years of hush-hush whispers, rewrites, and wishful thinking from both fans and creators, the long-awaited stage adaptation has found its fairy tale dream team.

The newest, and arguably most exciting, update? Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez have signed on to the project! Yes, the married songwriting duo behind “Frozen,” “Frozen II,” “Coco,” and “The Book of Mormon” have signed on to pen the score for the show.

Can you say EPIC?

The news was confirmed by Broadway World on June 25, setting social media abuzz with fans already dreaming up what Inigo Montoya’s ballad might sound like.

A Legendary Tale Meets Legendary Talent

If you’re not already familiar with the dynamic duo, well, prepare to be dazzled. Robert is one of the very few people on the planet to achieve EGOT status (that’s an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony). He’s also the only person to do it twice. His wife, Kristen, equally formidable, co-wrote the unstoppable “Let It Go” and nabbed her own Oscar wins alongside her husband.

Together, they’ve proven time and time again that they know how to write music that sticks, touches hearts, and, well, sells. Their ability to balance humor, heart, and spectacle makes them a perfect match. After all, it’s known for being a story that has part romance, part satire, and is entirely iconic.

Joining them is Tony Award-winning director Alex Timbers, known for turning “Moulin Rouge!” into a Broadway spectacle. As well as “Hamilton” producer Jeffrey Seller. Safe to say these two also know a thing or two about building pop culture-shaking hits.

So yes, dream team, indeed.

When Does ‘The Princess Bride’ Magic Begin?

While a firm opening date hasn’t been announced yet, this update marks a major leap forward. The project, which has been in development limbo since 2019, now has the creative horsepower to head full tilt toward Broadway. It was then announced that Disney Theatrical Production had teamed up with Sony award-winning composer David Yazbek, but it’s unclear why they decided to leave the project.

The duo is reportedly already writing songs, and the team is aiming for a workshop in the near future, with an official debut expected sometime in late 2025 or early 2026. They even have an official audition page for those who’d like to be part of the project.

Why This Isn’t Just Another Adaptation

It’s hard to overstate just how beloved “The Princess Bride” is. Based on William Goldman’s 1973 novel and immortalized in Rob Reiner’s 1987 film, the story follows Princess Buttercup, her loyal farm boy Westley, and a cast of unforgettable characters.

But it’s more than a fairy tale; it’s a self-aware, endlessly quotable, genre-defying adventure that has maintained a loyal following for nearly four decades. Turning that into a musical is a challenge, but if anyone can thread the needle between film and stage, it’s the Lopezes. No doubt about that.

So grab your wheelbarrow and holocaust cloak, because it’s really happening. And if you need us, we’ll be practicing our vocal warm-ups for “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to…duet.”
