While the biggest reunion at the 2025 Tony Awards was definitely the cast of “Hamilton,” many viewers were overjoyed to see another, much smaller reunion. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, who starred together in 1989’s “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” along with two sequels, showed up in matching tuxedos to the 2025 Tony Awards.
The longtime friends and actors were there to present Sarah Snook with the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Play for “The Picture of Dorian Gray.” But on the red carpet, they also teased their upcoming Broadway production of “Waiting for Gadot.”
The Longtime Friends Are ‘Bringing Themselves’ to ‘Waiting for Godot’
“We wanted to work together again in something that wasn’t that [“Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure”],” Winter, 59, told People. The play seemed perfectly suited to them.
“We’ve known each other a very long time. [It’s] a play about two people who have known each other a very long time,” Winter said. “Which actually matters, I think, to the play. And Keanu had this crazy, inspired idea that suddenly turned into reality, for both of us.”
“Yes, so this is a step into reality,” Reeves, 60, said, before he and Winter agreed that making “Waiting for Gadot” together was both something they wanted to do and felt they had to do together.
“It became a show we had to do, but I think, partly, getting Jamie Lloyd involved, getting his vision, his desire to do the play with us. That made it something we really, really, had to do,” Winter continued. “That’s incredibly exciting.”
Samuel Beckett’s “Waiting for Godot” premiered in Paris, France, in 1953, and has been adapted into thousands of iterations since then. When asked by People what they’d bring to it that’s different, the “John Wick” star replied, “It’s personal.”
“It’s very, very personal, and so, we’re bringing ourselves to it,” Winter added.
Keanu Reeves’ and Alex Winter’s Careers Took Very Different Paths After ‘Bill & Ted’
After their breakout roles as Bill and Ted, their careers went in very different directions. We all know Reeves’ became a movie star with films like “Dracula,” “Speed,” “The Matrix,” and other hit films. While Winter still acts occasionally, he began to focus on directing after “Bill & Ted’s.” Along with music videos by Ice Cube and Helmet, he’s directed many television series and documentaries.
“Waiting for Godot” will mark Reeves first time on Broadway, while it will be Winter’s third. Although Winter isn’t new to Broadway, he hasn’t been on stage since 1979’s “Peter Pan.” Before that, he starred in Broadway’s “The King and I” alongside Yul Brenner.
Reeves will play Estragon, while Winter will play Vladimir in “Waiting for Godot.” The show’s previews will begin on September 13. The play’s opening night is September 28 at the Hudson Theatre.
