As the 78th Tony Awards come to a close, so too do many of the productions that took over the stages for months on end.
Shows that didn’t take home any trophies have already said they’re leaving the stage. While shows like “Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Miserables” are meant to be produced countless times, many shows are mounted for a little while. That makes seeing these once in a lifetime shows all the more a treat.
However, it is highly possible a few can be toured at later dates.
Below are the shows set to close on Broadway this June.
Othello – 6/8/2025
The Denzel Washington/Jake Gyllenhaal led show didn’t garner any attention for the award show. It did, however, bring Washington back to the stage for the first time since 2018. The actor portrayed the title character while Gyllenhaal took over the role of Iago.
Good Night, Good Luck – 6/8/2025
George Clooney’s movie turned stage play that was also a CNN televised special is finished. The movie garnered a massive amount of attention and so did the play. Although the show had a relatively short life on stage since debuting in March 2025, Clooney and his cast – including Ilana Glazer and Clark Gregg – were received well for their work.
The Last Five Years – 6/22/2025
Starting life in Chicago in 2001 before heading Off-Broadway, “The Last Five Years” tells the familiar love story of a couple’s five year relationship. It uses a model of story telling where the love interests’ lives are told separately and in reverse chronological order.
Glengarry Glen Ross – 6/28/2025
David Mamet’s popular 1983 play was good enough to win a Pulitzer. After a short stint on Broadway after some time away, the show is set to go away again. The A-list cast included Bob Odenkirk, Bill Burr, Michale McKean and Kieran Culkin.
Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends – 6/29/2025
Less a traditional musical and more a tribute, “Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends” started life as a one off performance for a gala in 2022. That turned into a full blown production on the West End the following year before heading to Los Angeles after that. Landing on Broadway, the show featured the performances of Bernadette Peters – who was in every iteration since 2022 – and Lea Salonga.
The Picture of Dorian Gray – 6/29/2025
Sarah Snook’s Olivier Award winning performance (or rather, performances) of 26 roles took Oscar Wilde’s story to new heights. The use of live video and live acting was nothing short of awe inspiring. Not to mention a little funny at times.
