Imrul Hassan Recently Opened Up About Being Undocumented
In a May 19 report, Newsweek revealed what the Bangladesh native told them about what his life was like as an undocumented resident of the United States. Imrul was undocumented when he entered the country, and did not gain legal status until marrying his girlfriend.
He said his former status as an undocumented person gave him a “hollowing feeling,” but that the experience gave him “so much perspective in struggle.”
Imrul went on to Newsweek, “I think it’s led me to where I am right now, to where, I just wanna give back as much as possible.” The New Yorker said despite now being a legal resident, he realizes speaking openly about his story has the potential to put him at risk.
“I get comments …like, yeah, we’re sending this to ICE, so they’re gonna come get you, things like that,” he told the outlet. The star said although he “rationally” knows he’s safe, he knows there’s a chance “something could happen,” especially considering the recent deportations of green card holders.
Hassan Imrul Revealed How He Feels About Ex Wife
Imrul’s marriage that granted him his initial legal status eventually came to an end, but he seems to have no hard feelings towards his ex.
“We were together for a while. We loved each other and we thought eventually, you know, we’re gonna get married anyway, but [my immigration status] just expedited the whole thing,” Yahoo reports he said.
“I didn’t feel tied into my marriage or my relationship because of my immigration status. It was never that,” he continued. “It was – we loved each other we were together for that, you know, and I still believe in love,” the star explained.
