Andy Cohen Reveals ‘Very Funny’ Part of New Year’s Eve Hosting Gig

Andy Cohen revealed he has one issue with hosting CNN’s New Year’s Eve Live special with his pal Anderson Cooper. Speaking with People magazine in December 2024, the Bravo host admitted he doesn’t like having to be “the straight guy.”

While Cooper is usually serious during his CNN news broadcast, all bets are off on New Year’s Eve when the co-hosts with Cohen, often fueled with a few shots of tequila.

“Literally, he’s in a puddle of giggles for the last 90 minutes of the broadcast, and I’m the one that’s hitting all the commercial breaks,” Cohen told the outlet of Cooper. “I kind of turn into Mr. CNN for the last 90 minutes, and he turns into Mr. Bravo. It’s a very funny role reversal.”

Copper previously said he has an issue working with Cohen. During a December 20224 appearance on “Watch What Happens Live,” he was asked to reveal the most “annoying” thing about teaming up with Cohen on New Year’s Eve. “Just who he’s going to insult,” Cooper replied. “And like what the cleanup on aisle 3 is going to be in the morning.”

Anderson Cooper Is Known for His Giggling Fits On New Year’s Eve

Cohen is known for his signature giggling. He has fallen into multiple laugh attacks on-air, as seen in a blooper reel shared by E! News.

One of his best-known laughing fits came in 2011 during a “Ridiculist” segment on his show “Anderson Cooper 360.” While reporting on film actor Gérard Depardieu urinating on the floor of an airplane, Cooper famously said, “All I have to say is they should thank their lucky stars it wasn’t Depar-two.” As he burst into a fit of giggles, Cooper added, “Sorry. That made me giggle every time I read it.”

His most recent viral laugh attack came as he rang in New Year’s 2024 with Cohen. When the two received a call from John Mayer from Tokyo’s cat bar Cats in the Box, Cooper lost it.

As Mayer was shown surrounded by crawling cats, Cohen noted the situation didn’t look “sanitary.” Cooper could not contain himself, prompting Cohen to say, “He’s gone, he’s off with the fairies here. Just the shot of the cat’s [expletive] in your face is making him delirious.”

Andy Cohen & Anderson Cooper Have Hosted NYE Together For 8 Years

2025 will mark Cohen and Cooper’s eighth year ringing in New Year’s Eve together for CNN.

While their on-air drinking was previously called into question, Cohen announced that after Cooper’s dangerous, live coverage of Hurricane Milton last fall, he deserves tequila shots this year. “After what Anderson did in that hurricane, I’m not only giving him tequila, I’m throwing it at him,” Cohen told Variety in an interview.

CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live with Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen” airs live from Times Square in New York City starting at 8 p.m. ET on December 31, 2024.
