Last week, “Big Brother” fans got a real treat as Season 27 kicked off with a big splash.
During the premiere episode last Thursday, the 16 new houseguests were met with a variety of tricks arranged by “Mastermind,” the mysterious figure behind this season’s chaos, and his accomplice (which, of course, was one of the houseguests).
The houseguests were also shocked to learn that BB superstar and winner of Season 13 Rachel Reilly would be returning to the house this season. But that isn’t the only twist: as revealed by host Julie Chen Moonves, the head of household must now nominate three houseguests for eviction instead of two. That’s right, last year’s AI Arena is here to stay – rebranded as the BB Blockbuster.
When Ashley took a two-hour-long shower in HOH Vince’s private bathroom on night one, the resulting fallout (dubbed “Showergate” by the houseguests) led to her nomination – despite Vince claiming otherwise.
Tonight, houseguests will compete for the Power of Veto. It’s no doubt that Vince’s three nominees – Ashley, Zae and Ashley’s ally Amy – are going to be fighting their hardest for the chance to save themselves.
Warning: Spoilers for Season 27 of Big Brother are ahead!
July 16 Live Recap
8:05 p.m: Right after the nomination ceremony, Ashley confronts Vince about lying about her safety this week. Vince says that he believed she didn’t want to work with him post-Showergate. Of course, Ashley feels betrayed, and starts crying because she doesn’t think she can win any of the competitions to save herself. This isn’t a good look for Vince!
8:10 p.m: Vince tells Ashley that if he wins the Veto, he’ll take her off the block. Naturally, she doesn’t believe him. And she’s right – in his confessional, Vince reveals that he doesn’t have any plans to take Ashley off the block.
Meanwhile, Rachel gives Amy some words of encouragement. The Mom Squad is still sticking together!
Kelley, however, is disappointed that Vince didn’t take her up on her offer of being the week one pawn. Seems like she is the only one who actually believes their final two deal exists.
8:15 p.m: Sparks start to fly between Lauren and Zach as the two bond over their mutual commitment issues. They’re both interested in each other, but hesitant about showmances. They decide to stay friends – but time will tell whether they’ll be able to keep their relationship platonic.
But it looks like another BB romance may be in the cards, as Rachel plays cupid between Katherine and Rylie. Rachel is very pro-showmance, as she and her BB showmance Brendan are still going strong after 15 years!
8:20 p.m: Zae is dealing with his nomination very well, and Vince is clearly impressed. Because of Zae and Amy’s subdued reactions to their respective nominations, he decides that Ashley is the nominee who needs to go this week. The only problem with his plan? Ashley still has two opportunities to take herself off the block.
8:30 p.m: Adrian battles with the washing machine. Keanu gets to know Rachel, opening up about his father’s ongoing heath issues.
Jimmy decides that, despite his annoyance with Rachel’s return, he’ll try to use her as an ally. Rachel plans to play up the fact that she’s not only a BB veteran, but one who has won the game – after all, who will vote for someone to win twice?
And thus, Jimmy begins to recruit others into their group. He and Zach arrange a secret meeting in the boxing room at midnight. They dub their alliance, “The Heavy Hitters” – composed of Zach, Morgan, Vince, Jimmy, Rachel and Rylie.
Although, Rachel tells us, she’s more committed to Amy and the Mom-Squad 2.0.
8:45 p.m: Ava is starting to get a little annoyed with Keanu, as he seems to appear in every room she’s in. She’s quickly learning that there’s no privacy or “alone time” in the Big Brother house!
Zae is worried that he’ll be sent packing if Ashley or Amy win the veto. As a real “bro,” Zach wants to take him off the block, but is hesitant because of the new alliance with Vince. Naturally, he’s hoping not to be picked to play in the Veto competition. (Doesn’t he know that hoping you won’t be picked always means you will be?)
It’s time to pick players for the Veto competition, but Ashley is MIA. Where is she? The shower, of course! #Showergate continues.
The players for the Veto competition are: Vince (the HOH), Ashley and Amy (the nominees), Rachel, and Zach.
Vince doesn’t want the Veto to be used, but Rachel has other ideas. If she wins, she’s taking Amy off the block. Zach also can’t promise that he won’t use the Veto, which freaks Vince out. His own alliance won’t respect his nominations! This doesn’t bode well for the future of The Heavy Hitters.
9:00 p.m: Ashley asks Zach, who won one of the Mastermind’s competitions last week, to throw the Veto. He seems to agree, as winning two competitions during week one could put a target on his back.
The Veto competition begins! The backyard has been transformed into a (foul-smelling, according to Mickey) crime scene. The competitors are tasked with identifying three crime scenes, a car, a tent and an outhouse, by smell, tire tracks and footprints. They must match all clues with the three cases they correspond to.
It comes down to Ashley and Zae, as they are both stuck on their last crime scene. The other competitors can’t seem to get it, no matter how many times they stick their heads in the outhouse toilet (thanks for those very immersive shots, Big Brother).
And… Ashley wins! #Showergate wasn’t enough to keep her down! The lawyer from New York is here to stay.
9:10 p.m: Vince, on the other hand, is not happy. The Heavy Hitters’ worst-case-scenario has come true – his main target is safe.
He goes to his next option: Kelley. He decides to take her up on her offer to go on the block. Kelley wants to prove her loyalty to Vince, but he feels unsure about using an ally as a pawn. Vince tells her that she should prepare herself for the possibility of going home just in case, and Kelley says she has. Hopefully this deal doesn’t backfire on her…
9:15 p.m: Jimmy wants Vince to nominate the one “bro” he isn’t working with: Keanu. Vince, however, isn’t convinced, as nominating Keanu isn’t part of his plan at all. But, Jimmy goes around the house asking people their opinions about Vince nominating Keanu anyway. Big mistake!
When Rachel hears that they’re considering putting the Dungeon Master himself on the block, she’s not happy. She immediately tells Keanu about Vince’s alleged plan, who proceeds straight to confront Vince directly about the rumor.
After Jimmy’s game of telephone backfires, it doesn’t take Vince long to figure out that his supposed ally is using his name to make moves. Looks like Jimmy may be going on the block in Ashley’s place.
9:20 p.m: While folding laundry with Keanu, Jimmy tells him that he doesn’t want to backdoor anyone because he isn’t good at lying. As he lies to Keanu’s face… Yikes. Keanu starts dropping hints that he knows about Jimmy’s vendetta against him, Godfather-style.
Jimmy’s scheming seems to push Keanu into making some game moves. He goes to Vince and Kelley about the possibility of putting Jimmy on the block, and then to Ava about allying together against Jimmy. But, Ava decides to share what Keanu told her with Jimmy in order to pit the two against each other.
And it works! Jimmy, angry at Keanu for telling Vince to nominate him, says he’s going to expose “the true snake” at the Veto ceremony.
9:25 p.m: The Veto ceremony begins. Ashley, to nobody’s surprise, uses the Power of Veto on herself.
Vince decides to nominate Kelley in Ashley’s place, keeping true to his word to use her as a pawn.
But wait – Jimmy jumps up to speak before the ceremony finishes. He confronts Keanu about calling him “fake,” and tells everyone that he’ll be gunning for him. Keanu, unflinching, asks Jimmy how long it took for him to come up with his “this snake has bite” comment. The shade!
After that explosive Veto meeting, we’re certainly eager to see everything come to a head at tomorrow’s live elimination.
