Less than a year after capturing the hearts of “American Idol” fans with his raspy, southern rock vocals and humble demeanor, 2024 runner-up Will Moseley continues to make his mark in country music.
Season 22 judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie and Katy Perry knew there was something special about Moseley as soon as they heard the original song he auditioned with, “Gone For Good” — and so did fans of the show. After his audition aired, the song became Moseley’s first Billboard hit, reaching number 13 on Billboard’s Country Digital Song Sales chart, per Forbes, and generating millions of social media views.
Now, the Hazlehurst, Georgia, native has high hopes for his newest single, “Mechanic,” released on March 28, 2025, with his label since “Idol,” 19 Entertainment.
“You know, it’s just it tells a really cool story, and it kind of incorporates the stuff that everyone else
associates with a guy and a mechanic and working on cars,” Moseley told EntertainmentNOW the evening before its release. “And it relates all of that back to a woman fixing all of those (broken down) things in a man.”
Will Moseley Says There’s Something ‘Special’ About New Song ‘Mechanic’
When the concept for “Mechanic” came to Moseley, 25, he mentioned it during a songwriting session with his collaborators, including Nashville writers Kaylin Robinson and Jaron Boyer, who immediately loved the idea.
“I brought that idea in, and when I did, you know, they all — everyone kind of looked around the
room (at each other) and was like, ‘This is too good not to act on, not to make something happen,'” he recalled. “So we started writing and we’re really happy with what we come out with.”
The song’s been getting rave reviews from fans who’ve heard snippets on social media, eagerly awaiting its release, and Moseley said he’s been encouraged by all the positive feedback he’s received from people in the industry.
“We recorded a demo of it, and as soon that happened, we showed it to all of our (teams),” he told EntertainmentNOW. “Everyone loved it. And so it was one of those things (where we knew), ‘Hey, we got to get in the studio and make this happen. We really need this one to be recorded.”
The chorus of the tenderhearted ballad says: “I was broke down, I was lost, Yeah, I was I was stranded / Outta gas and runnin’ low on faith / She worked overtime reversin’ all my damage / Puttin’ back together pieces of a heart she didn’t break / How she did, it’ll never understand it /But when it comes to fixin’ me She’s a mechanic”
Moseley said he has performed “Mechanic” a couple of times for live audiences and said each time has been “really special.”
“We’re just excited, we love the song,” Moseley said. “We hope that everyone else does, and if they don’t, then it’s our job to go back and make another one and try again. But you know, we really hope that this one does great. We believe in it. We’re just excited for everyone else to get to hear something that we’ve been working on for so long.”
Will Moseley Will Be on the Road for Much of the Spring & Summer
After landing as the runner-up to season 22 winner Abi Carter, whom he still keeps in touch with, Moseley hit the ground running after the “Idol” finale and hasn’t slowed down.
He signed with the show’s record label partner 19 Recordings and has released several new country tunes, including “Everything But Me” in early December and a cover of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.”
Moseley’s still with his longtime girlfriend, schoolteacher Ryleigh Colter, who will join him on the road once school’s out for summer. The singer’s been touring a lot since the “Idol” finale, opening for Zac Brown Band — including performing his first arena concert with the band on New Year’s Eve in Atlanta — and co-headlining a tour with season 21 finalist Colin Stough.
On March 28, he’ll perform at Nashville’s Tin Pan South songwriting festival alongside Stough and season 21 “Idol” alum Haven Madison. This spring, he has tour dates with legendary country artists including Clint Black and Marshall Tucker Band. And in June, he’ll be back in Nashville to perform at CMA Fest, likely reuniting with some of his pals from “Idol.”
