“American Idol” season 10 winner Scotty McCreery has a lot to celebrate these days, but he’s also happy to celebrate his friends. The country star recently posted an Instagram reel in which he surprises ’90s band Hootie & the Blowfish with a culinary confection.
In the clip, McCreery is shown presenting the band with an impeccably frosted cake in honor of Hootie & the Blowfish Day. “I worked all night on it,” McCreery tells the band while showing off the cake decorated with a cute blowfish.
And yes, Hootie & the Blowfish Day is a real thing. According to the band’s website, in 2018 the mayor of Charleston, South Carolina officially declared August 11 as Hootie & the Blowfish Day. As for the cake, we’re not quite sure if McCreery actually baked it himself.
Scotty McCreery’s ‘Bottle Rockets’ Features a Beloved ’90s Hit
McCreery’s latest EP “Scooter & Friends” features the singer collaborating with musicians Lee Brice, Charlie Wilson, and Hootie & the Blowfish. The hit single “Bottle Rockets” is a collab between McCreery and Hootie, as the band’s song “Hold My Hand” is part of the chorus.
“It fit like a glove,” McCreery told Billboard of the fan-favorite ’90s jam. “Everyone was laughing and high-fiving because we knew we were on to something. The song really just spilled out from there.”
When it came time to reach out to Hootie frontman Darius Rucker about the band performing on the record, McCreery was understandably anxious. “To be honest, I was nervous to ask them about this song, because ‘Hold My Hand’ has to be one of their babies,” he shared.
It turned out Rucker loved the idea and the band was happy to collaborate on “Bottle Rockets.” But it sounds like McCreery was even happier. “You should have seen the smile on my face when I got that text back,” the singer said.
McCreery’s New Single Is Another Fun One
On August 15, McCreery took to Instagram to post a clip of his latest song “Whiskey Said” featuring country singer Lee Brice. The song is fun and upbeat, and McCreery’s reel shows him hanging out in a colorful sunlit bar, raising a bottle to the camera.
“We just out here doing what the whiskey said 🥃” McCreery captioned the post, which is a lyric from the song.
McCreery is enjoying a cold one in the video clip, which is probably hard-earned as he’s been performing throughout the summer across the U.S. The singer will be performing in Ridgefield, Washington on August 16 before making his way back to his home state of North Carolina for more shows.
