Sixteen-year-old Mattie Pruitt, who made it into the top seven of “American Idol” season 23, vied for viewers’ votes again on May 11, 2025. It was the first of two Disney nights, during which Pruitt had to perform a tune from Disney’s vast song catalog. Viewers had less than two hours to vote for their favorites during the show, determining who would make it through to the top 5 of season 23.
SPOILER ALERT: Do not continue reading if you do NOT want to know whether Pruitt made it into the top 5.
Voting closed during the final commercial break, and the results were handed over to host Ryan Seacrest to reveal which members of top 7 would advance to the top 5. So did Pruitt make it through? Sadly, no, she did not make it through.
Mattie Pruitt Says Learning Her Songs & Balancing School Has Been Stressful
For Pruitt’s performances on the May 11 show, the Mother’s Day selection she chose was “Those Kind of Women,” by country star Lauren Alaina, who was runner-up to Scotty McCreery on season 10 of “American Idol.” She also performed “Remember Me” from the Disney movie “Coco.”
Pruitt, who lives in Eaglesville, Tennessee, told local publication Williamson Source on May 9 that learning all of her songs has been “very, very stressful.”
Explaining her schedule, she said, “Like, it’s a full day. You don’t really get much breaks, and if it is a break, for me, I have to do school.”
The Judges Saved Mattie Pruitt From Elimination Before Disney Nights
Pruitt wouldn’t have been able to go to Disneyland and participate in the first Disney Night if it weren’t for the judges. At the end of the May 5 episode, she wound up in the bottom two alongside pianist Josh King.
On May 7, Pruitt posted some photos from Disneyland and wrote, “Getting saved by the judges was a moment I’ll never forget — and I’m so ready to prove why I deserve this spot in the Top 7. I’ve been working so hard this week and I can’t wait for y’all to see what I’ve been cooking up! LET’S DO THIS!!!”
Pruitt told the Williamson Source, “The whole time, I knew I was going to get cut because I accidentally saw Ryan Seacrest’s card,” adding that she was “freaking out.”
“I had time to overthink everything, so that’s why I started crying,” she said.
Once Seacrest announced she was in the bottom two, judges Luke Bryan, Lionel Richie, and Carrie Underwood had seconds to decide if they wanted to save Pruitt or King. In the end, they chose to add Pruitt to the top 7 and send King home to Charlotte. Many viewers caught the generous gesture he made to the judges, suggesting they choose Pruitt.
