Luke Bryan was on the receiving end of an object thrown at him while performing on stage in July. The “American Idol” judge said he felt a bit heated when it happened and now has an “official statement” about fans who think it’s a good idea.
Luke Bryan Opens Up About Being Hit in the Face on Stage
During an August 12 interview on “The Bobby Bones Show,” Bryan was asked about getting hit during his encore performance of “Country Girl (Shake It For Me)” at the North Dakota State Fair.
“It was this little beach ball thing, like a hacky sack,” he said. “When I’m sitting there singing, and I’m just doing my deal and it comes into my frame, obviously I flinched. It got me.”
The “Idol” judge noted that perhaps even more “frustrating” for him was the way the incident got blown out of proportion.
He explained, “But then the problem with it is, is then it makes all of my family members and friends that don’t have all the social media to go watch what actually happened, then they call me and then it turns into I got hit by, like I said, a baseball.”
Bryan shared his “official” take on the matter — and he didn’t hold back.
“My official statement is people throw things at artists and they’re idiots,” he said. “It’s the deterioration of the moral fabric of how your [expletive] ought to act.”
Luke Bryan Says He’s Had Worse Things Thrown at Him
While Bryan is not a fan of people throwing things at performers, he shared that he has been on the receiving end of much worse.
“This is not a new thing,” the singer shared. “That was a great thing to get thrown at me. It was a little beach ball. I’ve had $1,100 cell phones get thrown at me.”
He explained that fans want him to take a video, so they throw their phones on stage.
“Let’s just showcase entitlement,” he said of people tossing expensive phones at him to get a picture or video.
The small ball he got pelted with in July gave him a moment of unhappiness, but he carried on. “When the thing came in … the little ball or whatever it was came in, I mean, the first thing I do is, I see red, and I get my composure,” Bryan said.
He added that “it’s just bunch of kids being silly.”
“I got pissed for three seconds and finished it,” Bryan said of his performance.
In a July interview with Taste of Country, he chalked it up to someone having a little too much fun.
“It’s the last song of the night. It was a big ole fun party, and I think one person just took it too far,” Bryan said. “We see it. Every other entertainer out there is getting stuff — you get stuff thrown at ya.”
While he noted, “You hope that you can see who did it” and call them out, Bryan said pausing a performance “kills the vibe of the show.”
