“American Idol” season 6 winner Jordin Sparks has a different perspective about making music these days, but she has a good reason. Find out how Sparks took on a “more selective” approach.
Jordin Sparks Says She’s a ‘Bit More Selective’ About Music Now
Sparks’ career took off after winning “American Idol” in 2007 and she enjoyed a steady stream of albums, tours, and acting roles.
Now Sparks is dialing it back a bit and being “more selective” about her career.
In a June 2025 interview with Us Weekly, Sparks explained, “When I was a little bit younger, people were like, ‘Okay, we put this room together. This is what you’re going to do. This is who you’re going to work with.”
The “American Idol” alum continued, “Now, I’m a little bit more selective. I’ve been able to really find a group of people [who] I love working and writing with.”
Sparks released her album “No Restrictions” last year, noting that she and her creative team will “get together and have fun.” The result is “a beautiful song at the end of it.”
Jordin Sparks Says She Gets Inspiration From Her Husband & Son
Sparks also shared that her husband, Dana Isaiah, and their son, Dana Isaiah Thomas Jr., 7, provide her with “more inspiration.”
“I’ve got my wonderful son and my handsome husband over there,” Sparks said. “If I am at 0 percent, [Dana Isaiah] picks up that other percentage for me. If he’s at 80 percent, I pick up that extra 20 percent for him.”
The singer added, “I have more inspiration now than ever. I have a lot to be thankful for.”
Sparks also said that being on “Idol” taught her “perseverance” as she auditioned in multiple cities after she was rejected at her first audition.
She went on to win the competition at age 17 and remains the youngest winner in “American Idol” history.
“I think being so young really helped me when I was on the show,” she explained. “I wasn’t really thinking about what people were saying in a way that somebody a little bit older would.”
Sparks continued, “I wasn’t like, ‘Is there something underneath that?’ I took everything for face value. I remember, looking back at it now, I had a lot of confidence in myself.”
She added, “I still do.”
On May 23, Sparks took to Instagram to celebrate the anniversary of her life-changing “Idol” win.
“HAPPY 18TH ANNIVERSARY to the moment that changed my life forever! I’ll never forget. HOW IS THIS MOMENT OLDER THAN I WAS WHEN IT HAPPENED!?” she wrote in the caption.
