While singer Jelly Roll is waiting to reach his weight loss goals before he starts checking some pretty dangerous goals off his bucket list, there’s one he can cross off right now.
Stage diving.
The first-ever artist-in-residence on “American Idol” was so moved by an audience member’s poster at a recent concert, he felt compelled to come right down off the stage to make a personal connection.
The moment, caught on video and posted on Instagram shows Jelly Roll performing at the Lasso Montreal Country Music Festival when a fan’s poster is beamed up on the Jumbotron and catches his eye.
Jelly reads the poster out loud, “My father has been sober for, is that a hundred, 13-hundred-and-84 days?,” he asks.
“Yeeeeeeahhh! That is awesome!” the “Hard Fought Hallelujah” singer yells.
“Is your dad here tonight?” he asks the young lady holding the poster. She puts down the poster and points to the man behind her. “That’s your daddy right there?,” Jelly asks.
Jelly Roll Leaves the Stage to Offer Support to Sober Fan
Once Jelly Roll sees the man celebrating 1,384 days of sobriety, he says, “That’s you right there! You been sober that long Big Dog?” as the crowd goes wild and the man clearly gets emotional.
“Oh boy, we gonna call an audible, we gonna play something we didn’t plan on playing for this man. Hold on, let me go see him,” Jelly tells the crowd and his band as he walks across the stage to where the man and daughter are in the crowd.
“First of all, what a proud daughter,” Jelly Roll tells the man. “That’s a daddy-daughter moment I dream of right there. Congratulations on your 1300 days sober,” he says.
But saying that from the stage isn’t enough for Jelly Roll, who then decides to come down off the stage.
“Y’all stick with me,” he tells the crowd. “I never do this, but this is just awesome.” He walks through the crowd to the sober man and asks him his name and how long he’s been sober, shouting, “Let’s go Mike!”
After a hug, he tells his new friend, “Mike, I love you brother” and starts the crowd chanting “Mike Mike Mike!”
Audience Member Inspires Change In Set List
Jelly Roll tells Mike, “Mike, I have to tell you, I’ve never written a song about somebody being 1300 days sober, but I have written a song about someone experiencing their very first day sober, and I want to sing that for you tonight. Is that ok? So we can celebrate you tonight, all 30,000 of us. Is that cool? This song’s called ‘Winning Streak.” This is for you Mike!”
Jelly Roll then returns to the stage to sing his 2024 hit “Winning Streak.”
The poignant lyrics include, “And I’ve been losin’ myself, I’ve been losin’ my mind
And I’ve been standin’ in the rain, just tryna stay dry
I was so ashamed to be in this seat ’til I met a man who was 20 years clean
He said, “Everybody here’s felt the same defeat”
Nobody walks through these doors on a winnin’ streak”
