Tom Sandoval on America’s Got Talent?!?
Yep, that’s right. The former “Vanderpump Rules” star appeared in front of the judges with his band, Tom Sandoval & The Most Extras, in an episode that aired on Tuesday, June 24. And with that, he explained why this moment meant so much to him, especially after everything that happened in the past.
“A couple of years ago, I made some really bad choices,” Sandoval said ahead of the audition to the cameras. “I was involved in a very bad cheating scandal, and I let down a lot of people.”
“It pretty much destroyed my life,” he continued. “It was absurd how much coverage and how big it became. Ever since then, it’s like everything I do is completely criticized. I feel a lot of pressure.”
Then, when he took the stage, Simon Cowell pointed out that he’s friends with Lisa Vanderpump and asked about his transition to music.
“With being on a reality TV show, that’s very much about your personal life,” Sandoval detailed. “And a couple of years ago, I was involved in a scandal and I was labeled as the ‘Most Hated Man in America’ by The New York Times. It was really, really rough and I was in a very, very dark place. I felt as though I had nothing in my life and this band was the only thing that kept me going.”
So, what’s his hope by coming on America’s Got Talent?
“I would love nothing more than for us to tour the world and be the ultimate cover band, the party band,” he said.
Here’s What The Judges Had To Say About The Scandal
After Sandoval told the judges about the scandal, Cowell joked, “Let’s get America to like you!”
Then, as he began setting up, the judges turned to one another, with Sofia Vergara asking Howie Mandel, “What was the scandal?”
“He slept with his girlfriend’s best friend,” Mandel responded.
“No wonder nobody likes him then!,” Mel B chimed in.
“Because of that, he became the ‘most hated man’ [in America],” Vergara asked.
“Do you know how not interested I am in any of that stuff,” Cowell said.
Here’s What The Judges Said About Tom Sandoval’s Performance
Tom Sandoval & The Most Extras performed a cover of A-ha’s hit song, “Take on Me.” And the judges were certainly fans of it.
Mel B said that it “made me smile,” while Vergara said Sandoval did “look amazing up there.”
However, when it was Cowell’s turn, he didn’t hold back, telling Sandoval that his “vocals weren’t great,” but said that it was nice to see him stay “true to who you are.”
And with that, all the judges gave him a yes, allowing him to move on to the next round.
