‘Home Improvement’ Reunion: When and Where to Watch

There has been considerable interest in a “Home Improvement” reboot. While that’s not happening, Tim Allen and the cast of the legendary sitcom are delivering a reunion, which will take place on his ongoing show, “Shifting Gears.”

According to Deadline, the “Home Improvement” reunion will occur on the season premiere of “Shifting Gear.” The show airs on ABC, and the episode is set for October 1. Fans can expect to see Patricia Richardson, Richard Karn, and Debbe Dunning appear on the special episode.

As fans of “Shifting Gears” know, Allen plays Matt Parker on the show. The outlet reports that the three “Home Improvement” stars will support him in a unique way. However, details are being kept under wraps so as not to spoil the episode.

A Full ‘Home Improvement’ Reboot Isn’t Likely to Happen

Nowadays, reboots and continuations of older sitcoms are commonplace. However, it seems a bit unlikely that “Home Improvement” will get the reboot treatment. Richardson was on the “Back to the Best” podcast in 2024 and responded to the desire for a new version of the show.

She said, “No.. I thought it was so weird. I would hear on Twitter that he [Allen] was coming out publicly and saying this stuff about ‘everyone was on board to do a Home Improvement reunion,’ but he never asked me, and he never asked Jonathan, who I talk to.”

She then said, “Zach is now a felon. Taran hasn’t acted since he left the show. He’s not an actor anymore, and Jonathan is not really interested in acting. He wants to direct and write, and we don’t have Wilson. It’s not going to be the show.”

Richardson continued, “The show would be very weird. I think we did it, we did it well, we quit at the right time before it got really bad. It should just stay like it is.”

‘Shifting Gears’ is a Hit

Allen has remained quite busy in entertainment since “Home Improvement” went off the air in 1999. Regarding “Shifting Gears,” it premiered on ABC in January 2025. According to Deadline, the first episode amassed 17 million viewers in the seven days after it aired. This includes viewership from ABC, Hulu, Disney+, and other digital platforms.

This marked the network’s biggest debut since “The Conners” in 2018. “Shifting Gears” also stars Kat Dennings, Seann William Scott, Daryl Chill Mitchell, Maxwell Simkins, and Barrett Margolis. Nancy Travis and Jenna Elfman will also guest star in the show’s second season.
